Part 6:  Necessary Components for Community Sustainability

Processing of Raw Materials - Tool and Die

Once you have a supply of raw materials (iron, aluminum and other building materials), a community then requires the ability to manipulate and shape those materials into usable products. There are generally two steps in which to do this. The first step is gross forming of the material; the second is precision machining into the final shape.

Gross forming involves the casting of material into an overall shape. This can be done in one of two ways. The first and most ancient process of gross formation of parts for metal is to liquefy the material and pour it into a mold. The second and more modern way to form grossly shaped metal products is to take the raw material, convert it into a powder, put it into a shape generally packing it into a mold and then sintering it.

Both processes, molding and sintering can be done through electrical induction heating. As long as a community has a reliable source of electricity, it can shape materials as it wills.

The second step in processing raw material is precision machining. This process can be carried out by next generation technologies that involve electrical discharge machining or EDM. This uses electricity through wires, graphite and tungsten rods to finely shape the material to the required level of precision. Using next generation EDM, a community will be able to continue, or, if necessary, introduce the resources to build the essential equipment it requires.
